# The two-source mat: kit, safe gate and exact practice facts

**Before class:** Check current school material, privacy, access and display procedures. Adults prepare any printing and all cutting. Choose a clear stable tabletop, school-approved broad A4 or larger paper, thick pencils and large paper cards only. No staples, pins, tape, clips, string, small detachable pieces, blades, food or electrical equipment. A child may draw, point, speak, sign, use AAC, direct an adult or decline touch. The full no-material route is spoken: describe a zone, say its label, and explain which source could go there. Never require children to disclose family routines or school safety experiences.

**Optional real trial:** After local approval, give a child a blank broad sheet, two *large* source-label cards and one broad pretend-source card on a stable table. The child may mark the two zones, position their labels and place the pretend card, or direct an adult who physically does those steps. This temporary mat is a made solution only if it is actually assembled; a drawing is still a plan. Record who drew/positioned the labels and who placed the card. Invite a willing reader to find the pretend source and the real-source zone without coaching; record their actual words/action if a reader is present. Observe only what happened to the card at that moment: **STAYED** or **MOVED**, or **NOT TRIED** if there was no placement trial. An empty real zone remains empty; do not invent a tray count or reader answer. A child who stays on the spoken plan route still has valid design reasoning, but material use is not observed.

**Held checks:** Day 45 [Book Table](print/check-a-book-table.pdf) uses new source labels **DRAWN COVER** and **REAL BOOK SLOT**, with the latter empty. Day 50 [Maker Log](print/check-b-maker-log.pdf) uses a fresh three-part design display **PLAN / TRIED / CHANGE**; TRIED is blank until an approved real event. Keep these out of routine practice until first responses.

**Private teacher record:** record exact child design idea, chosen audience/purpose, support and access route, adult content cues, physical handler if any, actual card movement and reader action if any, or NOT TRIED/unknown. Store named child work under school policy. Do not publish it in the repo.
