# School-approved actual-device gate · conditional AC9TDIFK01

This gate applies only if an educator elects to let a child use the [offline copy checker](interactive/copy-checker.html) on an **actually running digital device**. The full [paper equivalent](interactive/PAPER-EQUIVALENT.md) is available at every step. A child can learn and show representation/correction without using a device; then digital-system exploration is recorded **NOT OBSERVED**, not treated as failure.

1. **Approve the device and adult plan.** Follow the school's current device, network, screen, child-safety, accessibility and privacy procedures. Open the contained page locally under supervision. Check the page is offline and no account, personal value, camera, microphone, upload or storage is requested. If any local control cannot be met, use paper.
2. **Offer accessible input.** Keyboard Tab and Enter/Space, native selects, pointer, switch access where configured and adult-directed input are possible. A child can decline the device. If the adult operates it, record that honestly and avoid claiming independent child exploration.
3. **Observe a meaningful action.** The child selects picture or symbol view, compares the source with puppet copy, changes a symbol position and uses CHECK. An educator notes which *actual hardware input* was controlled, what appeared on the *actual display*, what the *running software* did, and the child's communicated purpose. A single unexplained tap is insufficient.
4. **Keep data fictional.** The app contains only fixed P/T/P/B prop categories and a four-position copy. It has no free text or media input, storage or network request. Never add a child's name, photo, voice, location, account or real help route to the task.
5. **Record evidence separately.** Source representation/paper reasoning may sample K02; identifying an empty own-data category may sample P01. K01 requires observed actual running system engagement. If the device session was not observed, interrupted, inaccessible or adult-only, write **NOT OBSERVED** and plan another appropriate chance.

This is a teaching and evidence decision, not a QCAA assessment requirement, security certification or guarantee of a child's digital safety. Actual local device configuration and child access need school review.
