# Day 66 — Paper leaf sets

**Success:** Child counts and compares two sets of **paper leaf-shaped pieces**, then explains the result by counts or pairing. The pieces are an imagined drawing task, not collected leaves or evidence about a real plant.

**Prepare:** pre-cut leaf symbols from [paper-symbols.svg](paper-symbols.svg) or larger teacher-drawn paper pieces; [L01](print-aids.md) A12/B14; labelled mats and [comparison page](compare-and-pair.svg). Check with a new A13/B15 paper set. Avoid scissors at the learner station unless locally approved; pre-cut or use large counters instead.

1. **Retrieve, 3 min.** Show a paper leaf shape. Say, “This is a picture symbol. We are counting pieces on two sheets, not counting leaves on a real plant.” Ask what tools tell which set has more.
2. **Model, 5 min.** Move A pieces once each and count twelve, then B pieces to fourteen. Pair to find two B pieces unmatched. Say, “B has more paper pieces. My evidence is fourteen compared with twelve, and two B pieces without partners.”
3. **Paper garden game, 10 min.** Partners reset L01, then L05 (neutral paper marks standing for imaginary bird-picture marks, 13/16) if ready. One counts; the other pairs; swap and compare conclusions. The same plain counter can stand for a symbol when detailed pictures are distracting. Teacher checks three learners' one-to-one movement.
4. **Fresh check, 4 min.** Give new A13/B15 paper pieces in a different layout, no numerals visible. Child counts or directs a count, pairs if useful, and identifies B as more.
5. **Close, 3 min.** Ask what the mathematics does and does not tell us. **Key:** L01 B more 14/12, two B unmatched; L05 B more 16/13, three B unmatched; fresh B more 15/13, two B unmatched. No real plant/animal observation follows from these totals.

**If the child starts identifying species instead of comparing:** Thank them and return to “How many paper pieces in each labelled set?” Keep science discussion separate. **Access and record:** Use tactile leaf-shaped card or plain textured counters, enlarged labels, sign/AAC and child-directed moves. Record number strategy; species vocabulary is not scored.
