# Day 83 — Get ready to ask a fair class question

**25 minutes · AC9MFST01 partial practice · educator review pending**

**Success:** The child can repeat the given question, distinguish three exclusive answers, accept a pass and prepare a one-card-per-received-response collection without treating an absent card as a choice.

**Prepare:** invented two-view illustration or exact description, three [C/W/P choice cards](view-choice-data.svg), private folded-card or covered-envelope route, fictional [P3](print-aids.md) C3/W0/P2, three category mats. Do **not** collect identifiable class data today.

1. **Retrieve, 3 min.** Show yesterday's P2 display and ask what one mark stands for. Expect one received response, not two pictures in the P category.
2. **Model the collection rule, 5 min.** Read the exact class question. Present C, W and P with the same drawing/description. Say, “One volunteer chooses one card. Passing is okay. We do not guess a pass or ask why.” Model a private choice with a demonstration card; remove it. Show that two marks from one person are not two valid responses.
3. **Guided rehearsal, 9 min.** Learners draw and sort the five fictional P3 cards. Keep the W mat labelled but empty. Ask, “How many W cards were in **this complete practice bag**?” Zero. Contrast with a child who passes in a real survey: we know no W choice from that person, **not** that they chose another category. Count classified total five.
4. **Fresh independent check, 5 min.** Offer one P practice card and ask the child to put it in exactly one category, then show how many marks it makes. Ask where an unreturned/unclear real answer would go. **Key:** one P mark; no guessed C/W/P mark; unclear response is counted separately until clarified.
5. **Close, 3 min.** Ask learners to state a fair sentence for tomorrow: “We will count only the choices we receive.” Teacher prepares enough anonymous cards/envelopes for all who wish to reply. Do not promise a fixed result.

**If a learner says empty W means no class member likes W:** Point back to the **fictional** complete bag and the upcoming unknown class responses. **Access and record:** word/shape/tactile options, private AAC/sign/pointing, adult placement directed by child. Keep public charts free of names; note mathematical rule, not an individual preference.
