# Shapes and places · learner cards

**Choose one with your teacher.** Large paper pieces, tactile pieces, a screen or your own pointing can all show a maths idea. Tell, sign, draw or use your communication device to give a reason. You can direct an adult to move a piece. These paper maps are pretend.

## 101 · Sort by the edge

Look at large shape cards. Make a group with **curved edges** and a group with **straight edges**. Can you explain one choice by showing its edge? Ask if a shape seems to have both.

## 102 · Turn it

Choose two triangles of different size or direction. Turn one. Did it stop having three straight sides and three corners? Show how you checked.

## 103 · Four sides, another clue

Compare a square and a long rectangle. What can you say about both? What extra clue helps you describe the square card? Use matched paper strips if useful.

## 104 · Shapes in a picture

Look at an original paper room picture. Find a familiar shape **within** an object. Point to the part that made you think so. Does every part of the object have that shape?

## 105 · Make and explain

Use large strips or a safe digital tool to make a shape. Tell someone how many sides or corners you checked. Your teacher will give you a different new card for a quiet first check.

## 106 · Where, relative to what?

Put a large paper cup picture **on** a mat picture, then **beside** the mat. Say where it is relative to the mat each time.

## 107 · Two neighbours

Put a book picture **between** a star and a cup picture on paper. Name the two things it is between. Move the cup and check whether your sentence is still true.

## 108 · Follow two steps

On a pretend paper map, begin at the star. Go to the book, then to the box. Point after each step. Where did the visitor finish **relative to the book**?

## 109 · Change the map

Move one paper symbol. Give a two-step route that still reaches your chosen place. Let another person follow only your stated steps. Revise one unclear word.

**Day 110 brings a different teacher map.** Your first route helps plan what to practise next. There is no speed race.
