# Two fresh, public formative checks

These are teaching probes, not secure tests or formal assessment instruments. Read the brief without hinting at the answer. Offer the [equivalent route](LEARNER-CARDS.md) the child chooses, save the **first** response and only then use [educator interpretation](teacher/KEY-AND-NEXT.md). A child may decline, return later, or use an adult as a neutral card mover. These paper tasks do not prove camera technique, physical perception, actual audience response, or sound production.

**Source:** Inside one frame, a CIRCLE partly covers a TRIANGLE. Both are still present. The maker’s new brief is: “Make the TRIANGLE the front shape. Keep both shapes in the same frame. Change only which one is on top.”

**Child response:** Show or direct the new overlap. Identify the front shape and one covered edge. “I chose this because…” may be spoken, signed, pointed or AAC. Adult writes the child’s words, not a guessed intention. Do not show a solved variant before the first response.

## Check H · New close frame

**Source:** Frame 1 is WIDE and includes SQUARE and CIRCLE. Frame 2 is also WIDE and includes SQUARE and CIRCLE. The maker’s new brief is: “Keep frame 1 WIDE. Change only frame 2 so it is CLOSE around CIRCLE; SQUARE should be outside its border.”

**Child response:** Show or direct the two numbered borders, then name what can be seen inside each. A physical wide/close movable border, drawn boundary, spoken specification or raised outline is valid. Do not move frame 2 for the child before first response.

After each check, note what the child actually chose, what help was given, and a sensible next lesson. An adult can model a different source from [After Check swaps](PRACTICE-SWAPS.md) once the first response is saved.
