# Two fresh, public formative checks

These are teaching probes, not secure tests or formal assessment instruments. Present the source and brief neutrally. The child may draw, place a broad card, point or direct a neutral adult. Record the **first** response and support used before consulting the separate [educator key](teacher/KEY-AND-NEXT.md). Passing or returning later is allowed. A paper choice is not evidence a real audience understood it or that digital media was made.

## Check K · Three-dot legend

**Source:** In this new fictional paper game, the printed legend says **THREE DOTS = SQUARE TRAY**. The one THREE DOTS sign is currently beside ROUND TRAY. SQUARE TRAY is unmarked. Both trays remain in the picture.

**Brief:** “Keep the legend and both trays. Put the one THREE DOTS sign beside the tray it names. Change only the sign’s placement.”

**Child response:** Show/direct the sign placement and explain what the local legend says. The adult writes the child’s exact explanation and does not relocate the sign first. The sign does not have a universal meaning outside this card.

## Check L · No colour-only signs

**Source:** An invented paper game originally used a **red CIRCLE outline for GO** and a **blue CIRCLE outline for PAUSE**. On this black-and-white page, both signs are identical CIRCLE outlines. The words GO and PAUSE are read aloud and are not the thing the child must change.

**Brief:** “Keep GO and PAUSE meanings. Change **one sign** so the two can be told apart without colour. You may change outline shape, number of marks or safe tactile texture.”

**Child response:** Draw/select/direct one revised sign and name both resulting sign–meaning pairs. Do not provide a particular replacement shape before first response. The task concerns this paper game, not real traffic or safety signs.
