# Educator-only models and next steps

Keep this separate from [public K/L checks](../STUDENT-CHECKS.md) until the first response is saved. Multiple original revisions can be valid when they meet the precise brief. A neutral adult scribe/placer is access, not answer coaching.

## Fresh Check K

Start: **THREE DOTS beside ROUND TRAY; legend THREE DOTS = SQUARE TRAY**. A model response moves the *one* THREE DOTS sign beside SQUARE TRAY, leaving the legend and both tray drawings intact. The symbol’s assigned meaning is local and explicit. Changing the legend instead or removing ROUND TRAY does not meet the “change only placement” constraint, even if a different card might be coherent. Save the first response before explaining.

## Fresh Check L

Start: **GO = red CIRCLE outline; PAUSE = blue CIRCLE outline**. In monochrome, both outlines are the same. One valid model keeps GO as a single CIRCLE outline and changes PAUSE to a **SQUARE outline**, while GO and PAUSE meanings hold. Equally valid: a second raised bar/count inside one circle, a distinct safe texture, or a different thick outline that can be distinguished without colour. Changing only red to green, swapping meanings, or leaving both outlines identical does not meet this brief. The child is not asked to copy a real safety sign.

## Daily look-for and next teaching

| Day | Look for | Next move if unsure |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 31 | Child states one intended paper-card purpose before visual choice. | Offer three adult-stated purpose cards and accept another clear purpose. |
| 32 | One child-selected mark paired with one stated local meaning. | Make one broad pair first; avoid “symbols always mean…” language. |
| 33 | Child locates same sign in two jobs and changes one sign distinctly. | Hold both tray cards still while swapping one sign card. |
| 34 | Two guide placements match the child’s own recorded local legend. | Trace sign→legend meaning→tray one pair at a time. |
| 35 | K: THREE DOTS moved to SQUARE TRAY, legend and trays held. | Save first response, then teach with different After Check mark/trays. |
| 36 | Child-owned purpose, two different signs, two meanings, consistent finished card. | Mark plan/work-in-progress if adult chose content or guide incomplete. |
| 37 | One sign revision adds a non-colour difference; both meanings hold. | Offer thick outline/count/texture choices; do not demand fluent reading. |
| 38 | Actual willing-reader words logged only if sharing happened. | Offer rehearsal/later/pass; compare intention and answer without blame. |
| 39 | Real maker/purpose claim backed by authorised first-party source, or encounter held. | Continue adult original questions while sourcing permission and authority. |
| 40 | L: one sign changes by shape/count/texture, GO/PAUSE meanings stay. | Save first response; model a new pair after check. |

**Limit:** These checks sample local legend consistency and an access-minded sign revision. They do not prove full Foundation Media Arts achievement, universal icon recognition, an actual viewer’s understanding, or camera/audio/digital production.
