# English, Term 1 Weeks 1–2 — sounds, words and meaning

**Version:** v0.1, 29 September 2026. **Status:** educator, EAL/D, accessibility and local-syllabus review pending. [Ten 25-minute daily lessons](lessons.md), [original print/text aids](aids.md) and [formative check](assessment.md). The planned sequence samples CVC short-vowel readiness, then teaches **sh**, **ch**, initial **st** and final **nd**. It is a starter, not a complete Year 1 English or phonics program.

**Before Day 1:** Compare the sound order with the school's phonics scope and sequence; change the entry point if these correspondences are already secure or not yet introduced. The relevant learner must know common single-letter consonant and short-vowel correspondences to use the controlled texts independently. If not, explicitly teach those first with age-respectful words and contexts. Spoken language, dialect, hearing, motor output and English exposure can affect a check; provide the learner's established access route and seek specialist advice where relevant. A child may explain a story in home language with school-supported interpretation, but **the grapheme mapping and English decodability do not transfer automatically to translation**. No translations are supplied or certified.

**Prepare:** letter tiles or printed letter cards, four sound-box strips, markers, the controlled sentence strips and teacher-read story in [aids](aids.md). Read the text before assigning it. Capitalised names are regular with taught correspondences; point out capital letters. Some sentence strips include the high-frequency words **a** /ə/ and **is** /ɪz/; introduce them explicitly as whole words before asking for independent reading. Never call a text fully decodable for an individual who has not been taught its code. Give authentic published classroom texts separately under the school's normal licensed library provision; none is reproduced here.

**National content:** AC9E1LY09 (segment phonemes including initial/final consonant blends), AC9E1LY11 (short vowels, common long vowels, blends and digraphs for reading/writing), AC9E1LY04 (read decodable and authentic texts with developing phonic knowledge, phrasing, fluency and meaning), AC9E1LY05 (comprehension), AC9E1LY06 (create, reread and edit short texts), AC9E1LE03 (plot, character and setting), and AC9E1LA06 (simple sentence). These are **partial practice links**, not all descriptions achieved in two weeks. Exact codes were checked against the [official ACARA v9 download](https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/downloads), retrieved 29 September 2026, pinned workbook SHA-256 `db446882d2c00cf7c085a03e250e2442fda6c44011fc114680c46c1dc7a822c3`. [AERO early literacy](https://www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/practice-guides/early-literacy-practice-guide) informs the explicit sound–print connection and repeated response checks; school-specific sequence and review remain essential.
