# Learner checks · keep unseen until Days 25 and 30

Your teacher gives **one** print route that matches what your school has taught. You may point, use tactile print, read aloud or use your usual access mode. The adult reads the small story aloud; you are **not** asked to decode its rich words. You can speak, sign, point, use AAC, draw or direct an adult to write a story response. Try the print by yourself first; your teacher records any help. Daily practice for the check day comes afterward. This page contains no answers.

## Day 25 · Week 5 held-out check

**Route B · cumulative core, no final `ck`**

1. **Read these new words:** `dash` · `cash`.
2. **Child reads:** `A dash is on a map. Ben can sit.`
3. **Adult dictates one unseen word from the teacher-only card.** Say/mark its sounds and write or select its letters.

**Route A · only if final `ck` was taught**

1. **Read these new words:** `tick` · `lock`.
2. **Child reads:** `A tick is on a map. Ben can sit.` Here *tick* means a drawn check mark; the adult may explain that meaning **after** the print attempt.
3. **Adult dictates one unseen word from the teacher-only card.** Say/mark its sounds and write or select its letters.

**Adult reads this new story aloud to either route:** “At an invented drawing table, Mira made a paper frame for a small painting. The frame covered the painting's title. Mira moved the title onto a wide strip below the frame. A new paper visitor could now see both title and painting.”

**You respond:** What covered the title? What did Mira change? Show one first/next pair with cards, AAC, speech, sign or drawing. Then make one complete sentence about this *invented* event. Reread your sentence and show its start and end. If an adult writes for you, direct the wording yourself.

## Day 30 · Week 6 held-out check

**Route B · cumulative core, no final `ck`**

1. **Read these new words:** `band` · `tend`.
2. **Child reads:** `A band can stand. Dot can sit.` In this invented scene, *band* means a group of toy musicians; the adult can explain the meaning **after** the print attempt.
3. **Adult dictates one unseen word from the teacher-only card.** Say/mark its sounds and write or select its letters.

**Route A · only if final `ck` was taught**

1. **Read these new words:** `rack` · `muck`.
2. **Child reads:** `A rack is on a mat. Dot can sit.` Here *rack* means a small stand in a paper model; the adult may explain it **after** the print attempt.
3. **Adult dictates one unseen word from the teacher-only card.** Say/mark its sounds and write or select its letters.

**Adult reads this new story aloud to either route:** “In an invented paper garden, Sana laid out three picture cards: a seed, a shoot and a flower. A breeze turned the middle card face down. A listener thought the drawn flower came straight after the seed. Sana turned the middle card face up. The listener retold all three pictures in order. The drawings do not show how long a real plant takes.”

**You respond:** Which card turned over? What did the listener think before Sana fixed it? Show first/middle/last. Then write or direct one complete sentence about the invented pictures. Reread it and edit anything that would help a reader understand your idea.
