# Mathematics, Term 1 Weeks 1–2 — make, name and order to 50

This fortnight deliberately samples prior 0–20 knowledge and begins two-digit work; it does **not** fulfil the Year 1 requirement to represent/order numbers to at least 120.

## Prepare once

Provide each pair with at least five **teacher-prepared** ten-sticks/ten-strips and 20 loose counters, a wipe board, a 0–50 track or the [low-ink chart](aids.md#aid-2-number-track-and-card-bank), and pencil/large marker. Avoid loose elastic bands and small objects where a learner's safety plan makes them unsuitable; use large tactile pieces, drawn dots, a digital counter controlled by the learner, or an adult-operated set. Provide a visual/tactile tens–ones mat, not color alone. Have paper so children can cover a distracting section of the chart. Working with bundles means each bundle must be known to contain ten; audit one bundle at the start.

Pair talk is an option, not a score. A learner may communicate a number by numeral, objects, pointing, speech, sign, AAC, tactile selection or directing an adult. Record the response mode and any prompts. Use home-language discussion where school support permits, but the English labels in this draft are not translations. These lessons do not prescribe a fixed learning style.
