# Year 1 HASS · learner source cards

All names, dates, people, quotes and places below are **invented classroom sources**. They help us practise asking questions; they do not prove how every family or town lived. You never have to describe your own family, home, shopping, school route or history. Print one card at a time. Use the [A4 then/now aid](../print/hass-aid.pdf) or [selectable text](../print/TEXT-ALTERNATIVES.md). You can point, speak, sign, use AAC, draw or direct an adult to write your words.

## Day 1 · Two dates

**Source A, fictional 1989:** Nia lived with her grandmother and father. Both adults shared cooking and care. Nia carried a cloth bag to a neighbourhood shop.\
**Source B, fictional 2026:** Kai lives with two mothers and an older cousin. Adults share cooking and school pickup. Kai takes a reusable bag to a shop.\
**Prompt:** Which card is earlier? Name one question the dates help you ask.\

## Day 2 · Roles in two fictional households

**Sources:** A and B from Day 1. **Prompt:** Find one care role mentioned in each card. Name one similarity or difference **in the cards**. Do not generalise about all families.\

## Day 3 · Two school bags

**Source C, fictional 1996:** One child has a bag with books and a hand-drawn timetable.\
**Source D, fictional 2026:** One child has a backpack with books and a printed timetable.\
**Prompt:** What stayed the same in these two descriptions? What changed? What do we **not** know about every child?\

## Day 4 · A game and a list

**Source E, fictional 1995:** Children take turns in a chalk-grid game. An adult has a paper shopping list.\
**Source F, fictional 2026:** Children take turns in a chalk-grid game. An adult has a shopping list on a phone.\
**Prompt:** Name one thing still similar and one different in these two made-up cards.\

## Day 5 · New lunch-container source check

**Source G, fictional 1998:** A described lunch container is a metal tin with a lid; a water bottle sits beside it.\
**Source H, fictional 2026:** A described lunch container is a plastic box with a lid; a water bottle sits beside it.\
**Prompt:** Place the dates in order. Name one same feature and one different feature. Can two invented descriptions prove what every household uses?\

## Day 6 · One imagined library

**Source L1, fictional 2016:** A library drawing shows one doorway and two tall shelves.\

**Prompt:** What is unchanged? What has been added in this invented place? What would you check in a real library?\

## Day 7 · A park drawing and a proposal

**Source P1, fictional 2018:** A park drawing shows one bench, a path and a planted area.\
**Source P2, fictional 2026:** It shows two benches, the path and the planted area. Neither drawing shows whether the path is blocked.\
**Prompt:** What changed? Name one modest way to care for the fictional place and the source feature that supports your proposal.\

## Day 8 · Two invented voices

**Librarian, fictional quote:** “The new low shelf helps me keep the books organised.”\
**Visitor, fictional quote:** “The reading corner gives me a quiet seat.”\
**Prompt:** Match a benefit to each speaker. What would you still ask before deciding whether a real library works for everyone?\

## Day 9 · A noticeboard question

**Source N1, fictional 2008:** A small paper notice is high on the board.\
**Source N2, fictional 2026:** A large printed notice is lower on the board. The cards say nothing about language, sound, Braille or who can reach the board.\
**Prompt:** What has changed in the descriptions? Ask one question before proposing a change to a real school notice.\

## Day 10 · New hall source check

**Source H1, fictional 2014:** A community-hall drawing has an entrance sign, two tables and a central path.\
**Source H2, fictional 2026:** It has the same entrance sign and central path, with four tables.\
**Prompt:** Order the sources. Name one changed and one unchanged feature. Suggest one small way to care for this *fictional* hall, then say who would check a real proposal.\
