# Year 1 Science · learner cards for ten short activities

Print only the card for today. These are **original drawings described in words and invented scenes** unless your teacher clearly says an approved real observation is happening. A drawing can suggest a question; it does not prove a real animal found water or that a real plant grew. Use the [A4 aid](../print/science-aid.pdf) or its [selectable text](../print/TEXT-ALTERNATIVES.md). You can point, speak, sign, use AAC, arrange word cards, draw or ask an adult to write **your words**. No home plant, pet or outdoor trip is needed.

## Day 1 · Herb and bird

**Source:** A drawn herb is in a school garden bed. A drawn bird is beside a tree. **Prompt:** Pick one living thing, one need and a place feature that could help. What would you have to check in real life?\

## Day 2 · Two pots

**Source:** Fictional Pot A has a herb drawing with open air, a water-drop mark and a sunny window mark. Pot B is only an outline with no extra marks. **Prompt:** Name a feature shown for Pot A. What is **unknown** for Pot B?\

## Day 3 · Bird near a tree

**Source:** A drawn bird is on a tree branch. No water or food is drawn. **Prompt:** What need might the tree help with? Name one need the drawing does **not** show being met.\

## Day 4 · Same need, different place

**Source:** A cared-for herb pot and a bird at a tree are **fictional**. **Prompt:** Pick one need both living things have. Explain how the two places *might* help in different ways.\

## Day 5 · New rabbit-place check

**Source:** A **fictional** rabbit-enclosure drawing shows a roofed corner, an open side and one bowl; the bowl's contents are **not shown**. **Prompt:** Name two rabbit needs. Which might the picture show support for? Which need remains uncertain? Do not assume the bowl contains water.\

## Day 6 · Earlier and later shade

**Source:** Two **invented** drawings of one post: the **earlier** drawing shows shade on the left; the **later** drawing shows shade on the right. **Prompt:** Put them in order, describe what changed *in the drawings*, and ask one question for another day. Never look at the Sun.\

## Day 7 · A wet-day choice

**Source:** Invented Scene D shows a dry path. Invented Scene W shows rain marks on a path. **Prompt:** If Scene W were our school weather, what school-approved change could we make to an outdoor drawing activity? Which clue led you to choose it?\

## Day 8 · Three dates, one imagined plant

**Source:** Three **fictional** school-plant sketches: **11 March—small bud; 25 March—open flower; 12 April—seed head**. These dates do not describe a real local season. **Prompt:** Put the sketches in date order. Describe one change. What would you need to observe to know whether a nearby plant does this?\

## Day 9 · Seen, predicted or unknown?

Change one over-certain sentence into a careful question or possibility.\

## Day 10 · New two-date story

**Source:** Two new **fictional** drawings of one unnamed garden plant: **8 June—four leaves, no visible flower; 22 June—four leaves and one open flower**. The place and weather are not supplied. **Prompt:** Order the drawings, describe one change, say what you **might** look for next, and name one thing these drawings cannot tell you.\
