# Current Queensland syllabus crosswalk and boundary

Live checked **29 September 2026** against [QCAA Ancient History General senior syllabus 2025 v1.4](https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior-qce/syllabuses/snr_ancient_history_25_syll.pdf), March 2026. Printed pages are the syllabus's page numbers, not the PDF viewer's. General Units 1–2 are school assessed. These are **public formative checks, not school instruments**, and yield no QCAA result. The ten sessions total **250 minutes**, not the **55-hour** Unit 1.

| Syllabus point | Official location | Work in these ten sessions | School still has to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 hours per unit; schools plan context, depth and conclusion | printed pp 9–11 | A short entry into source inquiry, one selected landscape and one preservation question. | Timetable full contextual, depth and concluding studies and school assessment. |
| Across the course, students should have in-depth opportunities involving at least three ancient societies, including at least two in the summative Units 3–4 | printed p 10 | This site-method starter is not an ancient-society depth study. | Plan distinct ancient-society depth across the whole course, including Topic 2 and later units. |
| Aboriginal perspectives and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across teaching | printed p 6 | Uses public Gunditjmara-led pages as named contemporary sources and respects access protocols; no invented voice. | Consult relevant knowledge holders, school policy and place-specific protocols for local adaptations. |
| Unit 1 asks how historical and archaeological evidence constructs understandings; objectives 1–6 include questions, source analysis, usefulness/reliability, synthesis and communication | printed p 15 | Daily source-to-claim records and two fresh checks practise these objectives in a limited way. | Broaden source range, inquiry and assessment beyond this starter. |
| Unit 1 has **two topics**: Topic 1 *Digging up the past* and Topic 2 *Features of ancient societies* | printed p 16 | Begins Topic 1 only. | Teach Topic 2 with one chosen ancient society and a depth feature. |
| Topic 1 studies **one or two archaeological sites**; one develops understanding of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Ancient Australia | printed p 16 | Budj Bim is the selected Ancient Australia landscape; it cannot stand for all peoples or places. | Review whether this site and depth meet local course planning; select a second site if desired, with sources and permissions. |
| Topic 1 contextual study covers primary/secondary, ancient/modern, archaeological, literary/non-literary sources | printed p 17 | Distinguishes an ancient material landscape from modern reports, custodian interpretation and a 2019 listing record. | Add other source types when useful; do not call a modern website an ancient eyewitness. |
| Topic 1 depth asks authentication, condition, significance, ethics, reconstruction, analysis and usefulness/reliability | printed p 17 | Compares a phased excavation report, public interpretation and access protocol; tests inference and evidence limits. | Conduct a fuller depth investigation using further approved sources and cultural guidance. |
| Topic 1 conclusion considers preservation and whose past museums display | printed p 17 | Day 8 opens a preservation/representation question. | Extend the concluding study and consult Gunditjmara-led interpretation, not just state/institutional accounts. |

**Chronology precision.** The 2012 research dates charcoal in **channel infill** to about 6,600 **cal BP** (calibrated years before AD 1950) and infers an early channel phase; it places later side walls roughly 600–800 years before present. Do not present every visible stone as 6,600 years old, the entire landscape as excavated, or the date as direct measurement of each wall. The 2026 LiDAR paper is coauthored with Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Corporation and says digital candidates need field verification; it does not replace Traditional Owner knowledge or make site coordinates an unrestricted teaching asset.

**Jurisdiction.** QCAA is the controlling Queensland senior document here. There is no invented national Year 11 Ancient History code, endorsed sequence, complete Unit 1, secure assessment or classroom result in this pack. Other states and systems need their own explicit crosswalk and specialist review.
