The cultural landscape itself is ancient material evidence; a contemporary website describing it is a **modern source**. A source's usefulness depends on the specific question. ## A · Gunditjmara-led cultural interpretation

**Maker / time / kind:** the [Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation's Budj Bim sustainable-development page](https://www.gunditjmirring.com/budjbimsdp), a present-day Traditional Owner organisation's public account. It describes continuing Gunditjmara connection and water-management works for kooyang (short-finned eel). **Can support:** how custodians publicly frame the landscape as living Country and explain the aquaculture system. **Cannot alone support:** the exact date of each channel, every family's experience, or access to knowledge not shared on the page. **Do:** name its authoring setting. **Do not:** turn a living community into a vanished civilisation.

## B · Excavation and phased dating

The team excavated one Muldoons fishtrap complex. Charcoal in sediment filling a cut channel was dated to about **6,600 cal BP**; side walls belong to a later phase about **600–800 years** ago. **Can support:** a phased chronology at the studied feature, grounded in reported excavation and dating. **Cannot alone support:** the age of every Budj Bim structure, direct radiocarbon dating of basalt walls, or a date for all Gunditjmara knowledge. We paraphrase the abstract; no figure or table is copied.

## C · Australian Government site account

**Maker / time / kind:** [Australian Government world-heritage page](https://www.dcceew.gov.au/parks-heritage/heritage/places/world/budj-bim), last updated 2022, a modern institutional synthesis. It distinguishes the northern Budj Bim, central Kurtonitj and southern Tyrendarra components, and describes Gunditjmara ownership or co-management. **Can support:** the government's stated listing, broad geography and management account. **Cannot alone support:** an ancient eyewitness account or a substitute for Gunditjmara authority. Its broad “at least 6,600 years” summary compresses evidence from specific features and traditions; use B for the dating method.

## D · Gunditjmara visiting protocol

**Maker / time / kind:** [Budj Bim Cultural Landscape visitor page](https://www.budjbim.com.au/visit/cultural-landscape-map/), a public, present-day community-facing protocol. It asks visitors to respect cultural protocols for sites. **Can support:** a current access and custodianship decision. **Cannot alone support:** permission to share restricted coordinates, copy cultural material, or enter a site without arrangement. **Use:** as evidence that an archaeological site is also a place with living responsibilities, not an open collection of objects.

## E · Museum explanation of World Heritage listing

**Maker / time / kind:** [National Museum of Australia, Budj Bim resource](https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/budj-bim-cultural-landscape), a modern secondary public-history interpretation of the **2019** inscription. It describes the relationship between lava flow, engineered channels and kooyang harvesting. **Can support:** how a national museum explains the site's significance to a broad audience. **Cannot alone support:** every Gunditjmara account, the exact age of each feature, or that inscription transferred custodianship to UNESCO. Compare its framing with A and D before adopting it.

**Keep the chain visible:** ancient feature or practice → today's observation or testimony → published interpretation → your bounded claim. Do not label A–E as ancient primary texts. An archaeological research report can be primary evidence **of its team's modern investigation** while discussing an ancient site. A public protocol is primary evidence **of a present-day custodial position**.
