# QCAA Biology 2025 v1.3 · exact location and taught limit

**Authority:** [Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, Biology General senior syllabus 2025 v1.3](https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior-qce/syllabuses/snr_biology_25_syll.pdf), January 2026. The [current syllabus landing page](https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects/syllabuses/sciences/biology) lists v1.3 for students completing in 2026 or beyond (checked **29 September 2026**). QCAA's published subject matter uses bullet points, not Australian Curriculum v9 `AC9...` Year 11 codes. References below identify **printed syllabus page and bullet position**, not invented national codes. This pack is an independently authored interpretation, not QCAA endorsement.

| Official location and point | Narrow teaching trace | Honest boundary |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unit 1 *Cells and multicellular organisms*, printed p.20, objectives 1, 2, 4 and 5 | Days 1–10 describe and apply model cell structure; Days 1/5/9/10 interpret evidence and evaluate claims about invented diagrams. | No unit-level achievement claim, actual biological dataset or formal QCAA objective result. Objective 3 data analysis and objective 6 investigation need later work. |
| Unit 1 Topic 1 *Cells as the basis of life*, printed p.21, 15 hours, Science understanding **bullet 1**: prokaryotic/eukaryotic comparison | Days 2–3 and Check A use nucleoid/nucleus, shared features and explicitly limited examples. | No microscopy, taxonomy survey or conclusion from size/colour alone. |
| Same printed p.21, Science understanding **bullet 2**: named organelles and functions | Days 4, 6–7 and Check B identify **all nine names in the QCAA point**: nucleus, mitochondria, rough ER, ribosomes, smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, vacuoles, chloroplasts. One bounded job each. | Does not teach full ultrastructure, biochemistry or all cell-specific variations; the route is illustrative. |
| Same printed p.21, Science understanding **bullet 5**: hierarchy of cells/tissues/organs/systems and material exchange | Day 8 and Check B order two human chains and explain “contributes.” | Only the hierarchy intro; no developed analysis of nutrient uptake, gas exchange or waste removal across systems. |
| Same printed p.22, Science as a human endeavour **first bullet**: simpler components and emerging properties | Days 1/8/9 caution that a model component or tissue is not the whole cell/organ. | No full treatment of emergence or ethical contexts. |

**Not addressed from the same Topic 1:** printed p.21 bullets 3–4 (stem cell origin/differentiation and potency), latter part of bullet 5 (system material exchange), bullets 6–10 (specialised structures, membrane fluid mosaic and transport, active/passive comparison, size/SA:V and diffusion data); printed p.22 inquiry (microscopy/photos, electron micrographs, SA:V practical, stem-cell safety/ethics). Topic 2, Topic 3 and every other unit are untouched. These 250 minutes are only **4 hours 10 minutes of starter sessions**, versus the Topic 1 notional 15 hours and Unit 1 notional 55 hours. School pacing can differ.

**Assessment and safety boundary:** The syllabus's Units 1–2 assessment conditions (printed p.6) require schools to design **2–4 assessments across both units**, at least one per unit and each objective assessed at least once. These public checks are formative teaching prompts, **not school instruments** or replacement evidence. Unit 1 expects real or virtual lab work and microscopy across the unit (printed p.20); none was run here. A school decides local sequence, assessment, practical risk process and reasonable adjustments. No national/state-wide Year 11 requirement is asserted for an elective.
