# Complete text and tactile alternatives for the A4 aids

Both [route-grid.svg](route-grid.svg) and [exchange-mat.svg](exchange-mat.svg) are original scalable vectors with an SVG title and description. Their PDFs print on A4. The text below supplies the **actual content**, not a generic “image of worksheet” label. Screen-reader users can copy it; a teacher can build it with raised string, 16 paper squares, braille labels, counters or spoken coordinates. Colour is decorative; row/column and H/T/O labels carry meaning.

## Route grid

Page top is up. Four columns A, B, C, D run left to right. Four rows 1, 2, 3, 4 run top to bottom. Every square has a two-part label: column letter then row number. One move goes only to an adjacent square above, below, left or right. The upper grid is Map A:

| Row | Column A | Column B | Column C | Column D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | A1 reading nook | B1 art cart | C1 water point | D1 quiet table |
| 2 | A2 puzzle shelf | B2 open mat | C2 handwash | D2 plant |
| 3 | A3 book returns | B3 build table | C3 doorway | D3 help desk |
| 4 | A4 coat hooks | B4 garden tray | C4 display | D4 recycling |

Below is a **blank** four-by-four grid with the same column/row labels. The learner marks a start, finish and sequence of moves. In a nonvisual version, lay out 16 tactile squares in four rows, with column labels above and row labels at left. Move one counter one square per direction. An adult should not silently correct a wrong move; the learner needs to test the path.

## Exchange mat

The top line reads “Same amount, different groups.” Three empty large boxes are labelled `H · hundreds`, `T · tens`, `O · ones`. Directions read: “Build, sketch or tell your groups. Open a bundle; count everything again. One hundred = ten tens. One ten = ten ones.”

The lower portion has these fill-in prompts, in order:

1. First grouping: H ___, T ___, O ___.
2. What did you open? One hundred / one ten.
3. New grouping: H ___, T ___, O ___.
4. Check the same total: ___ + ___ + ___ = ___.
5. What stayed the same? ___.

For a tactile version, use a labelled three-pocket board. A large paper square or envelope stands for 100, a strip with ten tactile dots for 10, and a single dot/counter for 1. Exchange a hundred square for **ten** ten-strips or one ten-strip for **ten** singles, allowing the learner to count them. A learner may direct another person to move the parts and respond orally or by AAC. No tiny printed element is necessary to solve the problem.
