Success today: A child builds ten, knows a full ten-frame has ten counters, and orders cards 0–10 with the quantity increasing by one at each step.

Prepare: Ten-frame; ten counters; numeral cards 0–10; floor or desk number path. For children needing a smaller step, prepare cards 0–5 or 5–10 only.

  1. Reconnect, 3 min. Show nine in a ten-frame. Ask, “What do you notice about the last space?” Add one. “Now every place is filled. Count to check: ten.”
  2. Model, 6 min. Show the empty frame with 0 and full frame with 10. Build 0, 1, 2, 3 along a path, adding one object each time. Continue to 10 with children helping. Say, “The next number has one more object. Zero starts the path; ten is our full frame today.”
  3. Play: footstep path, 9 min. Mix cards 0–10. Pairs lay them in order, place a matching quantity next to three chosen cards, and deliberately hide one card for another pair to find. Variants: street house numbers, a walking trail of ten markers, numbered museum shelves. Keep order based on number, not the size of the printed card.
  4. Independent try, 4 min. Give 0, 4, 5, 9, 10 out of order. Ask for the correct order, then ask, “What comes just before ten? Show me ten objects.”
  5. Check and close, 3 min. Remove 6 from a visible 0–10 path. Ask which number is missing and how the child knows. Verify a ten-object build by counting once.

If cards are ordered by their printed shape or physical size: Keep card sizes identical and pair each numeral with a growing counter set. If 10 is read as “one and zero,” say “These two digits together name ten” and pair with the full frame.

Access routes: Place tactile numerals or raised-dot quantities along a reachable desk path, use spoken sequencing with a partner placing cards, or offer a large-print vertical path. Movement along a floor path is an option, never required.

Record: full ten-frame recognised; accurate count to 10; 0–10 ordering; missing 6 or near-10 reasoning.
