Success: The child compares category counts by counting or one-to-one matching, describes the actual received-response source and refuses a claim about non-responders or “best way to learn.”

Prepare: Day 84's actual cards/chart if collection finished; otherwise label it not observed and use a fictional deck. Keep actual and fictional sheets physically separate. Prepare fresh F85 C1/W3/P2, category mats and blank chart. Have the private actual-count record available, not learner names.

  1. Retrieve, 3 min. Ask learners to match one actual received card to its mark or, if no live collection completed, state why only fictional data are available. Recount any suspect lane before interpreting it.
  2. Model a careful claim, 5 min. Point to the observed actual totals, whatever they are, or to a clearly labelled fictional set. Say, “I can tell which received choice appears more, less, the same or none. I cannot tell why every person chose it or what a person needs to learn.” Give a tie sentence if two counts match; do not force a winner.
  3. Guided comparison, 9 min. Partners pair object cards to marks, count each category and compare using more, fewer, same, zero as supported by the actual chart. Check classified total and unclear separately. Ask whether the page should use a particular view because of the count; a class editorial choice may follow, but the data do not prove a view is universally best. If no actual chart, practise on P2/P3 and label the result fictional.
  4. Fresh independent try, 5 min. Sort unseen-in-class F85 picture cards, mark once each and answer “Which received choice appears most? How many cards are in this invented bag?” Key: W3 most; C1 least; total6. Ask whether this proves a real class result; no.
  5. Close, 3 min. Child completes “Among the responses we actually received, ,” using the real count only if observed, and “We still do not know .” Record a count reason and one next teaching move. Do not publish individual choices.

If a learner reports a fixed-deck count as the class result: Place a bold REAL/FICTIONAL source tag on each sheet, then revisit the genuine cards and exact tally. Access and record: raised chart lanes, card-to-mark matching, spoken/text readout, AAC/sign/pointing and private response. Record first independent comparison, total, source qualifier and support separately.
