Codes: AC9E7LA03, AC9E7LA04, AC9E7LY06. Goal: produce a short explanation with steps and a justified limit. Prepare: Text B and Check A.

  1. Purpose · 2 min. Say: “A reader should be able to follow your instructions without you standing beside them.”
  2. Model opening · 5 min. Write: “A two-choice key sorts items by repeated pairs of observable features.” Follow with “First…” to signal a method.
  3. Plan · 6 min. Learners order four cards: name set/scope, ask paired question, follow answer, test all items. Ask why a limit sentence belongs at the end.
  4. Compose · 7 min. Independently make a 4–5 sentence explanation for the six model cards, ending with what to do if a seventh item does not fit. Use a diagram plus captions if that communicates the same steps.
  5. Peer test · 3 min. A partner follows the writing literally and identifies a missing direction, without rewriting it for the author. Author revises one instruction.
  6. Exit · 2 min. Everyone points to the limit sentence; teacher samples focus learners' independent explanations and uses the key for next teaching.

Access: sentence starters for structure, not completed content; tactile model cards, large print, oral explanation recorded in teacher notes with a transcript if used locally.
