Days 61–64 and 69 include this optional R route inside their normal 25 minutes. P is the complete Page Nook fiction route. A child may change route, close a field, use an imaginary person or pass without penalty. Prepared K01 opportunity is not an observed outcome: no actual family, child, source, permission or response has been collected during authoring. Blank original mats contain no private facts.
Prepare once · before offering the route
- Choose an appropriate private invitation. School leader/educator checks curriculum, safeguarding, communication, custody and local family circumstances. Use the ordinary approved private channel; never send an automatic message. Explain the small person/connection/place task below. No reply means no participation, not consent. Child choice is required again at the lesson, even if an adult agreed. No home task is compulsory.
- Let the child choose the person, source and amount. Use a willingly offered family account or an already authorised school-held source appropriate for this child. The child may use roles rather than names, choose any permitted person they recognise as family, include broad places or leave them closed. An ordinary willing adult's spoken account can work: record who supplied it, actual date of the account, exact relevant words or a confirmed paraphrase, permission/audience and any correction. This date is not a birth date. A person may have several growing-up places. A child can choose their own source-backed account; do not require an interview, photo, genealogy or purchased object. A helper/team member is not automatically family. If the source is not about the learner's family, it remains useful concept/skills practice rather than that personal K01 component.
- Agree the smallest scope. Confirm whether reading, a private child-directed representation and local teacher record are permitted. Separately confirm any audience beyond the designated educator; default closed/private. No personal names, dates, addresses, family status, photographs or recordings are needed in the public resource. No upload/export to SubjectNest, public board or sharing with peers. Respect correction/withdrawal and school retention/deletion. Do not seek migration reasons, absent-person explanations, medical details, cultural identity, spirituality or community-held kinship knowledge. Use the child's/source's permitted relationship words without inventing cultural equivalences; the authority gate applies if community-held content is offered.
- Ready a genuinely private school arrangement. Use a designated educator and approved quiet/private response space or a closed card/directed response. Other children use the familiar fiction station under the school's actual supervision plan. If staffing, privacy, source access or consent is unavailable, use P now and arrange another ordinary sitting for R. Do not claim a whole class was privately observed in seven minutes. Sample a few learners each day; unsampled responses remain unobserved.
- Ready broad components. Two reusable paper circles/large objects, removable connection line, pre-made connection mat, two place boxes/story strip, opaque cover/envelope and exact source words. Adult handles cutting/lines/folds if the child directs. Flat/oral/no-touch alternatives do the same source task. Nothing has to be written or folded by the child. Keep the actual source privately off the fictional A–E pages.
- Choose one small job. One relationship link or one place box is enough for this sitting. The two-place page can continue next day; do not add work beyond the advertised clock. Reuse the same approved source across the five ordinary branches. Read one relevant sentence at a time. Invite source-backed questions and positive small discoveries, not a recital of evidence statuses.
Copy-ready optional invitation · educator sends only if appropriate
We are making small person-and-place stories. If your child wishes, they can choose a person in their family, how they are connected and a broad place where that person was born or grew up. A short ordinary account is enough; no photo, exact address or explanation of a move is needed. You and your child choose what stays private or blank. We will use it only with the agreed educator and keep any record under school rules. Please use our usual private communication route if you want to take part or correct/remove information. No reply is needed to decline. The complete made-up story activity is available at school.
Five ordinary handoffs
| Day | Small practical job and ordinary questions | Source/knowledge aspect |
|---|---|---|
| 61 | Choose two circles or an oral pair. Child directs a permitted person/role cue and connection line. “Who would you choose?” “How are they connected?” “Who tells us?” One question may remain open. | Family person(s) and a relationship actually stated; no assumed household or biological relation. |
| 62 | Put one exact permitted place cue in BORN or GREW UP; if available add the other. “Where does this account say they were born?” “Where did they grow up?” “Shall we leave this space?” | Birth and raising places separately, source precision retained. Blank is not a guessed place. |
| 63 | Put a speaker/source cue beside one circle/box. Tell one detail and, if chosen, a bounded view or next question. “Whose words?” “What does this part tell us?” | Source-linked person/relationship/origin detail. S03 only when a perspective is actually shared; no compulsory feelings account. |
| 64 | Child opens, corrects or closes one field, or chooses a respectful question for a willing source. “Keep, change or close?” “Would they like to tell us?” No new interview required. | Correct source attribution and source gap/choice. An answer not obtained stays absent. |
| 69 | Choose a flat strip, circles or a private oral story; tell one person/connection/place detail with source cue. “Which part shall we tell?” “Who told us?” Close/return it to the agreed educator. | A short actual family narrative with only supported components; not proof of complete K01 or year attainment. |
Days 65 and 70 remain new fictional checks only. No actual family materials, rehearsed new facts or worked answers are introduced into them. Capture first responses before feedback, with one-part-at-a-time neutral reading/response-mode help. A later sitting is extra time, not a claim every task fitted this one.
Concise local educator note · not a child worksheet
Use one source note across the sequence and sample one child's decision at a time:
Private source ID / actual account date / source type: ___________
Permitted words or confirmed paraphrase / source owner: __________
Current school + adult scope / child choice / correction or withdrawal: ___
Date + child's exact first words/point/action / support: _________
Family person ___ relationship ___ born place ___ raised place ___
For each: sourced response / not known / not supplied / private / unobserved
One next question or later opportunity / custody: ________________
An approval has its actual date/scope; a missing or withdrawn permission is not filled from a model. Store only necessary facts locally. A closed/private field is not evidence of inability. If family/source facts are absent, the child can still learn relationship and born/grew-up terms, ask a question and make a fictional story.
Component decisions · exact K01, no compulsory disclosure
| K01 component | Suitable bounded opportunity/evidence | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| People in their family | Child-chosen permitted actual family person/role linked to the child's recognised family, through appropriate communication/source. | Fiction, a team/helper alone or identity/appearance cannot establish the personal component. |
| How they are related | Child shows/tells an exact sourced connection using circles, line, words/sign/AAC or directed adult marks. | Do not invent relationship type, rank families or require a genealogy. |
| Where they were born | Exact permitted source's birth-place detail, at its actual broad precision. | A growing-up place is not automatically birthplace; no required address/date. |
| Where they were raised | Exact permitted growing-up place(s), distinct from birth where the source distinguishes them. | A current place, surname, accent or move reason cannot fill this component. |
Prepared routes are ready to adapt; actual sources/approvals and learner responses remain local and conditional. Record observed with support / observed independently / not yet observed, plus private/unknown source gaps where applicable, by component. One chosen connection/strip is a small sample, not exhaustive family knowledge or automatic whole-row attainment. No pilot response is needed to author this usable workflow.
Full P / closed-field route
Say “We can use the made-up people.” Use A/B exactly with the broad circles and two boxes: Page Nook's stated connections and places, one named voice and a question. Ordinary P branches and Days 66–68 remain complete. A child may invent a new toy person instead for practice, with its own clearly invented source; don't mix toy facts into R. A pass can be observing/direction, closing the private field and choosing fiction later. No response means no learner attainment recorded; participation choices are respected. The paper relationship/place play is legitimate concept and skills practice; it cannot become the child's actual family knowledge.
