Success: The child sees or feels three distinct positions repeating, copies two full units and continues with the next three positions.
Prepare per pair: three each of shell, stone and feather picture cards or three safely distinct classroom shapes, plus three each of arch, column and roof paper shapes for the fresh try; strip and P7/P8/P9/P12 cards. The printed shape cards can substitute for either triple. Do not require handling real natural materials.
- Retrieve, 3 min. Show yesterday's leaf–leaf–pot twice. Ask how many positions are in its repeating part; today all three positions can be different.
- Model, 6 min. Lay shell picture, stone picture, feather picture twice. Say, “The repeating part is shell, stone, feather. It starts again after feather.” Bracket the first three and the second three. Add one of each in that same order.
- Guided game, 9 min. Partners choose museum picture cards, reach–sway–pause movement choices, or drum–bell–shaker symbol cards. One copies six positions and continues three; the other checks against two complete units. Swap. Movement can be chosen with a pointer or AAC rather than performed.
- Fresh try, 4 min. Show arch, column, roof, arch, column, roof. “Find the repeating part and continue three.” Use original paper shape cards or objects.
- Check, 3 min. Ask what comes right after roof and why. Key: arch–column–roof is the unit; next arch, column, roof; arch immediately follows roof.
If the child copies but changes the order when continuing: Put a marker under the first unit and read it left to right, then compare each new position with the matching place in the earlier unit. If the three labels are unfamiliar, substitute three familiar distinct shapes without changing the ABC structure.
Access and record: Use tactile or large-print shapes, spoken description, sign/AAC and directed placement. No hearing, vocal performance or movement is required. Record copied positions, unit, continuation and cue.
