These numbers are invented for a mathematics lesson. East Vale and its library trial are not real. Do not use these tables to claim that a local population wants a particular opening hour. You never need to share your own travel, family, employment, access needs or finances.

Card A — Type of session and room choice

Imagine 40 visits to a trial reading room. Each visit has two recorded categories: session (morning or afternoon) and room choice (quiet table or group table). A person may have visited more than once; the card counts visits, not unique people.

For a fair comparison of room choice within each session, use a row percentage: cell count ÷ that session's row total × 100. Write the denominator and a sentence with the category names. A difference in this invented table is an association in the table, not proof that time of day caused a choice.

Card B — Six trial weekends

Each pair is one invented weekend. Let x be the number of later-opening hours and y the number of visits counted during those hours. Different weekends may also differ in weather, publicity and other events. A longer opening provides more time in which visits can be counted; the counts are not rates per hour.

Plot x horizontally and y vertically, or use a tactile/grid equivalent. Describe direction, form and strength separately. From Day 8, a spreadsheet may calculate Pearson's correlation with =CORREL(B2:B7,C2:C7) if you enter x in B2:B7 and y in C2:C7. Check your ranges rather than copying the formula blindly. Square the returned value for R². A negative r would still produce a non-negative R².
