Success: Child moves ten loose objects once each, says/signs/selects the total ten, and links the collection to numeral 10. Prior 0–20 evidence remains in the Week 10 portfolio.

Prepare: ten large counters per pair, a cleared “not counted” mat, a “counted” mat, numeral 10 card and T01/T10 from context cards. Keep a spare set of nine and eleven for a fresh distinction; do not mix them into the ten at first.

  1. Retrieve, 3 min. Show eight counters in a line. Ask, “How did we keep track last term?” Accept touching, moving or directed adult movement. Invite a final “eight,” then clear the mat.
  2. Model, 5 min. Spread ten counters irregularly. Say, “I move one across for each count word. The last word tells me how many are here: ten. I can show this with 10.” Deliberately point twice at an already moved object; ask why that would make an unreliable count, then recount correctly.
  3. Partner task, 10 min. Children act out T01 and T10 with their own ten counters, changing the arrangement between scenes. One moves, the other checks that the source mat emptied and the counted mat has ten; swap roles. Teacher watches three focus learners, asking “Would spreading these change how many?”
  4. Fresh check, 4 min. Give each focus learner an unseen pile of ten, nine or eleven. Ask them to count and choose 10 only if it matches. For a child not yet secure, use ten and nine only and record that smaller contrast.
  5. Close, 3 min. Say, “Ten can be spread out or close together.” Ask one child to show the last count word as the whole-set answer. Key: T01/T10 are ten; only the ten-pile takes card 10; nine and eleven do not.

If the child double-counts or skips: Move every object to a new bounded area while counting once, then ask for the last number again; do not merely correct the spoken answer. Access and record: Use grippable/tactile counters, a quiet table or adult movement directed by the child; allow sign/AAC or numeral choice. Record actual set, whether movement was independent, and the next set to recheck.
