Goal: plot (x,y) with x horizontal then y vertical; locate axes. Materials: labelled grid, counters, optional raised axes.

  1. Notice, 3: Find crossing of axes. Key: origin (0,0). Ask whether (0,0) lies in any quadrant. Key: no, on both axes.
  2. Model, 5: Plot (3,2): from origin 3 right along x, then 2 up parallel to y. Say ordered pair aloud “x three, y two.” Plot (0,3) on y-axis; x=0 means no horizontal move.
  3. Together, 8: Plot (1,4), (4,1), (0,-2), (-3,0). Contrast (1,4) and (4,1) to show order matters. Let child trace axes physically or with cursor.
  4. Try, 6: Learner plots (2,3), then reads a teacher mark at (-1,0). Keys: first Quadrant I; second on x-axis. Record if adult only provided motor placement.
  5. Check, 3: “What point is 4 left and 0 up/down?” Key: (-4,0), x-axis. If (0,-4), repeat x-first route.
