Negative numbers increase as you move right: -2 is greater than -5. 0 is neither positive nor negative. “Four units below zero” is -4; the sign depends on a stated reference, not whether the situation is desirable.

An ordered pair always reads (x, y). A point like (0,3) is on the y-axis; (-2,0) is on the x-axis. Each axis tick is one equal unit. Give quadrant names only after learners can locate the signs.
