Ten minutes · home routine / counting. You need: Two or three
unbreakable plates, cups or napkins. A pretend table for toys works too.
Play: Ask the child who the table is for: people, toys or imaginary
visitors. They can place one item at each spot, add a spare, or change the
plan. It is play; it need not end in a real meal.
Adult says: “What does each spot need?” “Have we got enough?” “How could
we check?” Let them move things to show the answer.
Child chooses: Number of places, objects and whether to count aloud,
point, sign or use their own words. No one has to describe their household.
Notice: Did they match objects to places or notice a missing one? What
reason did they give for their arrangement?
Access and safety: Use large light items within reach; an adult can set
items down where the child points. Avoid breakable crockery, cutlery with
sharp edges and hot food. No screen is needed.
