A 250-minute, optional worked start to Unit 1, Investigating the Ancient World, Topic 1, Digging up the past. The selected archaeological landscape is Budj Bim on Gunditjmara Country. This is an Ancient Australia case, not a generic example of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories. The unit requires both Topic 1 and Topic 2. For Topic 1 a school examines one or two sites, and one must develop understanding of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Ancient Australia. The school must also select an ancient society and societal feature for Topic 2. Ten short sessions cannot complete the 55-hour unit, establish a universal first sequence, or serve as school assessment instruments.
Start in five minutes. Open the ten lesson scripts, practice source cards, learner desk, three routes per day, two optional evidence swaps per day, example bank, optional hands-on lab and six A4 aids and exact text alternatives. Keep the two fresh public checks for Days 5 and 10; discuss the worked teacher feedback after the initial response. The checks and key are public by URL and not secure. The spoken prompt transcript can be read live; this pack claims no recorded audio. Crosswalk, source/rights register and run-through state what is verified and what still needs school review.
Cultural authority is part of the method. The Gunditjmara are living custodians of Budj Bim. Their own cultural interpretation and visiting protocols are sources, not decorative context. Do not copy site photographs, maps, stories or restricted knowledge into a worksheet; do not ask pupils to imitate ceremony, invent an Elder's words, map sensitive features, or collect artefacts. A paper model uses invented shapes and explicitly is not a Budj Bim reconstruction. If a school wants a visit or location-specific extension, arrange it with the Gunditjmara-led program and follow its access rules. This pack was not reviewed or endorsed by Traditional Owners; a teacher and local community partner must review local use and any adaptation.
Offer access choices without labels. Every route aims at the same dated, sourced archaeological judgement. A learner may read, hear the exact text read, type, speak, use AAC, or arrange labelled tactile cards. Record support and judge source reasoning separately from reading speed. No one needs to reveal identity, family history or beliefs.
