Learner prompts

Target: distinguish a material landscape, a present-day account and an excavation report as different evidence. Prepare: Cards A/B, evidence-kind sorter.

  1. Launch · 2 min. Put labels MATERIAL FEATURE, MODERN COMMUNITY PAGE and RESEARCH REPORT on the desk; none is a substitute for the others.
  2. Model · 4 min. Place a channel/remnant as ancient material evidence; A as present-day custodian interpretation; B as a 2012 report of research. Explain that we are looking at descriptions, not collecting or reproducing an artefact.
  3. Guided reading · 5 min. Ask what B's abstract can answer about one excavation and what A can answer about continuing connection. Record maker and purpose for each.
  4. Practice route · 7 min. Choose a Day 2 route. Sort the three kinds; make one defensible claim from A and one from B with a limit for each.
  5. Audit · 4 min. Challenge “The website is an ancient eyewitness” and “The research team owns the place.” Repair both using source type and custodianship.
  6. Exit · 3 min. “Can a 2012 report be primary?” Key: primary for the team's recorded investigation, not an ancient written witness.
