- Print retrieve · 3 min. Offer red, cup, ten at taught point; keep interview terms adult-read.
- Model · 4 min. Ask an invented source, “For this paper board, which shape label would you choose: dot, stripe or square? You may pass.” Contrast with a leading “You like my stripe, don't you?”
- Guide · 5 min. Children sort possible replies: named shape, “pass,” and a private family story. Only the first two are needed; nobody is pressed for the third.
- Child create · 7 min. Child chooses one of book, maker or paper-stage display contexts and composes a neutral, answerable question using voice, sign, AAC or scribe; include pass/repeat.
- Listener test · 4 min. Adult roleplay chooses one item or passes. Child listens, checks whether the question yielded an answer to the stated task, and directs one wording edit if needed.
- Exit · 2 min. Child states what would be recorded: source's object choice or pass, never name/reason unless willingly given and locally allowed.
