Prepare: Fictional Courtyard C place-source, art-canvas, saved rubbing/drawn paper; optional private approved dated observation.
- Invite and choose · 3 min. Read Courtyard C as fiction: path middle, growing patch each side, bench upper right. Ask, “Which feature would you like your picture to care about?” Child can choose a different invented place instead.
- Model · 4 min. Adult points to supplied path: “This is in our source.” Place a rubbing patch: “I chose this mark for my art; it is not a plant fact or real care action.” No species, condition, weather or history is inferred.
- Explore · 5 min. Child selects one source feature and one art material/mark. With a real locally approved source, record date/exact viewing source privately; otherwise use complete fiction route.
- Make/direct · 7 min. Child makes/directs two broad possibilities: e.g. room around a growing patch or a seat kept ready for someone. Invite their own care idea/question. Record source fact separately from invented relation and proposed care. Art does not authorize action.
- Notice and next · 4 min. Ask, “What came from the source? What did you choose?” Accept pointing/sign/AAC/description. Only actual dated observations are observations; Courtyard drawing stays fiction.
- Clear and close · 2 min. Store selected patches/source privately. Actual care, outdoor activity and Country/Place knowledge retain separate local gates.
Look/listen for: source/art distinction and chosen intent. If unclear, name one supplied feature and one invented mark in a different source before another attempt.
